Plastics

HDPE

HDPE also known as High-density polyethylene is a thermoplastic made from petroleum. It is made from little branchings this means it has strong intermolecular forces and tensile strength, where as LDPE doesn’t have these string bonds. HDPE has a high specific strength, is hard, has an opaque colour, can withstand high temperatures and contains the chemical elements carbon and hydrogen. Some HPDE products include: milk tubs, watering cans and folding chairs

LDPE

LDPE also known as Low-density polyethylene is a thermoplastic made from petroleum. Its was the first grade of polyethylene first produced in 1933 by Imperial Chemical Industries, one of the largest chemical producers in the world, using a high pressure process which is still used to produce this plastic today. LDPE is non reactive at room temperatures and can withstand temperatures of up to 95 °C, it comes in opaque and translucent, it is quite flexible but breakable. It is made from more branchings than HDPE so it has weaker intermolecular forces its tensile strength is also lower but resilience is higher, it contains the chemicals carbon and hydrogen. Some LDPE products include: trays, six pack rings & plastic wraps

Assignment One

I Should Have Never Bought.....

Last year around Christmas time I pay £150 for a Sony Ericsson w910i, at the time this was one of the best phones money could buy but once I had it about a month I soon found that this was no the case. At first the phone would work perfectly, letting me make calls, send text messages & listen to music but then a right light above the camera would illuminate and the screen would turn black and the phone would vibrate when the screen would return the phone would reset the wallpaper and theme to default but also reducing my battery but 20% each time it did this, and this was happening at least 3 times day most days.

As well as this problem the phone would also not let me listen to music using the walkman, one of this phones key features, I’d click on the walkman player and the phone would appear with an error message and then redirect me to the main screen.

Six months or so past and my phone was literally falling apart, the screws at the back of the phone fell out and the plastic cover on the front started to lose key pieces of material that held the front cover in place, it soon got to the stage where I was using a rubber band to keep the phone from falling apart.

The ironic thing is thought that now I have a phone that cost me £25 it has all the features my old phone had but works better than my old phone ever had. I wish I had never bought this phone
